Planning New Siding? Ask About Air Sealing Before the Walls Are Covered

A siding estimate is a chance to ask about more than the color of your home. For homeowners in Jeffersonville, New Albany, Clarksville and the Louisville area, the planning stage is a useful time to discuss what will happen behind the new exterior finish.

Why ask before siding comes off?

The U.S. Department of Energy explains that air sealing reduces leakage through a home's enclosure. Some wall improvements are easier to reach during re-siding, and exterior insulation can be considered while the wall is exposed. That does not mean every siding project needs the same upgrade. Ask your contractor to explain what makes sense for your existing wall assembly.

1. What is included behind the siding?

Ask for a written description of the work around the existing wall, window openings and trim. Which materials will remain, which will be replaced, and which conditions cannot be confirmed until removal begins? Request a clear process for photographs, pricing and your approval if hidden damage is found.

2. Where will air leaks be addressed?

DOE distinguishes caulk for stationary joints from weatherstripping for moving parts such as operable windows and doors. A siding proposal should identify the locations being addressed rather than simply promise to make the house airtight. Ask which details are included in the siding work and which require a separate assessment or trade.

3. Should exterior insulation be evaluated?

Ask whether the project creates a practical opportunity to evaluate exterior insulation. Have the contractor explain any effect on window and door trim, transitions and the complete wall assembly before adding it to the scope. Request the proposed materials and installation details in writing; avoid choosing an upgrade from a thickness or price alone.

Compare the scope, not just the final number

When comparing bids, use the same questions for each contractor: What is included? What is excluded? How are unexpected conditions documented? Who approves additional work? A clear answer lets you compare the work being offered and plan your budget. Do not assume a particular energy saving, rebate or tax credit is guaranteed.

Plan your Southern Indiana exterior project

Indiana Roof & Home provides siding, windows, gutters and roofing. Bring photos of your exterior and a list of concerns when discussing your project. Ask about the areas you want evaluated and request an estimate that describes the proposed work.
